Web-Engine Sentry is a plugin that offers protection for comments, administrative login, and form submissions. While it won’t prevent human submissions, its primary objective is to make it challenging for automated programs to access your site.
This is a privacy-first plugin – no tracking or personal data is collected by our servers, beyond that necessary to account for your usage and authenticate you as a user.
This plugin utilizes the web-engine cloud services to generate challenges for your users to solve. This service offers a limited free service and will require registration to utilize.
The free option will allow you to test the service and assess its potential benefits for your organization. Each time a Captcha is successfully solved, a “credit” is charged. Pay as you go for what you use only and contribute fairly to maintaining the platform.
Please note that the basic Captchas generated for free outside the initial free credit can be easily solved by AI within a second. We strongly recommend upgrading to the paid service, which will generate more robust challenges providing enhanced protection and enabling our ongoing product development.

Highly available and cloud-powered. Web-Engine Sentry is served from our cloud platform, distributed across multiple datacentres for resilience. Each layer – the plugin loader, the challenge client, and our API – is designed to fail over automatically between datacentres, so even a full regional outage won’t stop your logins, forms, and comments from being defended. Protection continues transparently, with nothing for you to configure and no interruption to your visitors.

While it is not feasible to guarantee complete protection against automated attacks, our objective is to render the process as challenging as possible while maintaining user-friendliness. The service is not limited to a single type of puzzle, and we employ additional metrics, such as the visitor’s location and solving speed, to further profile potential actors. Our primary objective is to continuously enhance this plugin, both in terms of the range of supported plugins and the execution method.

Can I use the service without the plugin?
An API and a PHP-based SDK are available, enabling direct integration with our services. These will be released in the near future under the same license as this plugin, allowing developers to integrate with their products.

The captcha shows “Authentication error” — what does this mean?
This appears when our service rejects your site’s key while starting a challenge (an HTTP 401 response). It usually means the site has become disconnected from the Web-Engine Cloud, or its keys were reset or rotated, so the captcha cannot load until the site is reconnected. Reconnect your site — or re-enter your public and private keys — from the plugin settings. A step-by-step guide is available at https://www.web-engineer.co.uk/doc/sentry-wordpress. If the message persists after reconnecting, please post a ticket.
