About Voicgen
From the official readme · v1.0.1Description
Voicgen is an AI text to speech plugin for WordPress that converts your posts and pages into natural-sounding audio and adds a clean, accessible audio player to your content. Visitors can listen to your articles while commuting, working, or multitasking — the same audio experience used by major publishers, without the enterprise price tag.
Audio is generated and hosted in the Voicgen cloud, so there is no load on your WordPress server and no audio files clogging your media library. Generate once, and the audio is cached and served fast to every visitor.
Voicgen also turns articles into 60-second social videos — vertical 9:16 clips with an AI voiceover, word-by-word karaoke captions, and auto-selected footage — ready to post to Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook. Videos are created in your Voicgen dashboard, and you can switch on auto-generation so every article that gets audio gets a video too.
Start free. No credit card required. Connect your site, pick a voice, and your first article can be playable in under five minutes.
Why add text to speech to WordPress?
- Accessibility – Readers with visual impairments, dyslexia, or reading fatigue can listen instead. The Voicgen player is built to WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Engagement – Audio versions keep visitors on the page longer. Listeners finish articles they would otherwise skim.
- Reach – Your content works in situations where reading doesn’t: driving, cooking, the gym.
- Credibility – The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the BBC all publish audio versions of articles. Voicgen gives smaller publishers the same capability.
Key features
- Natural AI voices – Realistic, human-sounding voices (Luna, Atlas, Iris, and more), not robotic browser speech synthesis.
- Automatic article-to-audio conversion – Auto-generate audio when posts are published or updated (on by default; toggle in Settings → Voicgen). You can also generate or regenerate from the post editor.
- Lightweight embedded audio player – The player loads asynchronously and is style-isolated (Shadow DOM), so it won’t clash with your theme’s CSS or slow down your pages. Place it above or below content, or anywhere with the
[voicgen_player]shortcode. - AI audio summaries – Generate a short spoken summary of long articles so time-poor readers get the key points in under a minute.
- Article-to-video generation – Create 60-second vertical videos from your posts in the Voicgen dashboard, with AI narration, karaoke-style captions, and matched stock footage. Optionally auto-generate a video whenever audio is created. Built for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts.
- Cloud generation and caching – No server load, no storage used on your hosting. Audio is generated once and cached.
- Transcripts and timestamps – Word-level timing data behind every audio file, with an optional transcript panel in the player when enabled for your plan.
- Multi-site management – Manage several websites (Properties) from one Voicgen account, each with its own API key.
- Works with your setup – Compatible with the block editor and classic editor. Works in page-builder layouts that render standard post content; use the shortcode for custom placements.
Who is it for?
- News publishers and local newspapers – Give every story an audio edition without hiring narrators.
- Bloggers and content creators – Let subscribers listen to your posts like a podcast.
- Newsletters with a web archive – Add audio to your web versions and give readers another way in.
- Business and corporate blogs – Make long-form content easier to consume.
- Accessibility-focused websites – Provide a read-aloud option that meets WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Social media and marketing teams – Turn every published article into a short video for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts without an editor or editing software.
How it works
- Install the plugin and create a free Voicgen account.
- Add your site as a Property in the Voicgen dashboard and copy the API key into Settings → Voicgen.
- Choose a default voice.
- Publish a post (or generate audio from the editor). The player appears automatically above or below the article — or wherever you place the
[voicgen_player]shortcode.
Free plan and pricing
The free plan needs no credit card and includes a monthly allowance of audio minutes plus watermarked vertical videos, so you can try both formats before paying anything. Paid plans (Starter, Publisher, Enterprise) add more audio and video minutes, remove the watermark, and unlock more voices and team features. Voice cloning and API access are available on the Enterprise plan. Full details on the pricing page.
Voicgen is a cloud service. The plugin is free; audio generation beyond the free allowance requires a paid Voicgen plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is Voicgen free?
The plugin is free, and Voicgen has a free plan with a monthly allowance of audio minutes — no credit card required. Larger allowances and extra voices are available on paid plans.
Do the AI voices sound natural?
Yes. Voicgen uses state-of-the-art neural text to speech, the same class of voice technology used in professional audiobook and podcast production. You can listen to samples at voicgen.io before generating anything.
Will it slow down my website?
No. Audio is generated and hosted in the Voicgen cloud, not on your server. The player script loads asynchronously and the player itself is style-isolated, so it doesn’t fight your theme’s CSS.
Where are the audio files stored?
In the Voicgen cloud. Nothing is added to your WordPress media library and no storage is used on your hosting.
Does the audio update when I edit a post?
Yes. When auto-generate is enabled, Voicgen regenerates audio after you change the title, content, or excerpt of a published post. You can also regenerate manually from the Voicgen Audio panel in the post editor. Edits that only change tags, categories, or the featured image do not trigger a new generation.
Which languages and voices are supported?
Voicgen includes 10 AI voices (including Luna, Atlas, Iris, Orion, Nova, and more) across multiple English accents, with multilingual narration in 30+ languages. Available voices depend on your plan — see the Voicgen dashboard for the full list and samples.
Is the player accessible?
Yes. The player is built to WCAG 2.1 AA: keyboard operable, screen-reader friendly, with visible focus states.
Can I use my own voice?
Voice cloning is available on the Enterprise plan. You record a sample, and Voicgen creates a custom voice for your brand.
Can Voicgen turn my articles into videos?
Yes. From your Voicgen dashboard you can generate a 60-second vertical (9:16) video for any article, with an AI voiceover, word-by-word captions, and automatically matched footage — sized for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. You can also turn on auto-generation so a video is created every time an article’s audio is generated. The free plan includes watermarked videos so you can test it.
Do video captions sync with the voiceover?
Yes. Captions are timed word-by-word to the narration (karaoke-style), which is what keeps viewers watching with the sound off — how most social video is consumed.
Can I manage multiple websites from one account?
Yes. Each site is a Property in your Voicgen dashboard with its own API key and settings.
How is this different from browser-based text to speech plugins?
Browser-based plugins use the device’s built-in speech synthesis, which sounds robotic and varies by device. Voicgen generates a real audio file with a neural AI voice, so every visitor hears the same high-quality narration on every device.
Do I need a Voicgen account?
Yes. Sign up at voicgen.io and create an API key for your Property in the dashboard.
What data is sent to Voicgen?
When audio is generated, the plugin sends your post title, post content, post URL, site domain, and your API key to Voicgen servers (api.voicgen.io). The frontend player script is loaded from cdn.voicgen.io.
Can I disable audio for a single post?
Yes. Use the Voicgen Audio meta box in the post editor and check Disable audio for this post.
