About Sideconvo Voice, Chat & Search Agent

From the official readme · v1.4.2

Description

Give your visitors instant, accurate answers — without lifting a finger.

Sideconvo turns your WordPress content into a smart voice and chat AI agent. Instead of forcing visitors to dig through menus or run keyword searches, they simply ask a question — out loud or by typing — and get a direct, relevant answer sourced from your own pages, posts, and knowledge base.

No AI expertise needed. No complex setup. Connect, choose what to index, and your agent is live.

Why site owners love Sideconvo

  • Works with your existing content — no manual data entry, no copy-pasting. Your pages and posts become the agent’s knowledge base automatically.
  • Voice + chat in one — visitors can speak or type; the agent handles both.
  • Always up to date — publish or edit a post and it is indexed in real time. No manual re-sync required.
  • Fits any site — blogs, business sites, membership platforms, e-commerce stores, news sites, documentation portals, and more.
  • Full control from wp-admin — manage what gets indexed, monitor sync status, and troubleshoot from a clean admin panel — no separate dashboard to learn.

Key Features

AI Agent

  • Understands natural language — not just keywords
  • Supports voice and chat interaction
  • Answers questions sourced directly from your content
  • Graceful fallback to WordPress native search if the AI is unavailable

Content Sync

  • Automatic sync for posts, pages, and custom post types
  • Taxonomy support — categories, tags, and custom taxonomies
  • Selective indexing: choose exactly which content types to index
  • Per-item exclusions and optional expiration dates
  • Real-time sync on publish, update, or delete
  • Scheduled posts automatically sync when WordPress publishes them
  • Bulk sync and bulk remove actions from WP list tables

Semantic Search

  • WordPress search is powered by Sideconvo’s vector backend — results ranked by relevance, not just keyword matches
  • Two-layer cache (object cache + transients) keeps response times fast and API calls minimal
  • Automatic fallback to native WordPress search if the Sideconvo API is unavailable
  • Toggle on/off and configure cache TTL from the Settings screen

Multilingual

  • Full WPML and Polylang support
  • Language-aware indexing — only the correct language version is indexed
  • Per-language item counts in the Content Types settings

Admin & Reliability

  • Reconciliation dashboard — compare local and indexed content, fix mismatches
  • Sync health indicator in the sidebar with direct links to problem areas
  • Subscription and plan management built into wp-admin
  • Automatic re-index when your site URL changes
  • Rate-limit awareness — the plugin waits and retries automatically

How It Works

  1. Connect — sign in with your Sideconvo account and paste your API key. Takes under a minute.
  2. Choose — select which post types and taxonomies to index.
  3. Index — initial indexing runs automatically in the background.
  4. Go live — your AI voice and chat agent is ready. Visitors get instant answers from your content.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0 or higher
  • PHP 7.4 or higher
  • A Sideconvo account — sign up free at platform.sideconvo.ai

External Services

Important: This plugin connects to external Sideconvo services to provide AI-powered content indexing and the voice/chat agent. Please read this section carefully.

This plugin integrates with Sideconvo, a third-party AI platform that indexes your WordPress content and powers the voice and chat agent your visitors interact with.

When does the plugin communicate with Sideconvo?

  • When you authenticate with your API key during initial setup
  • When content is published, updated, or deleted on your WordPress site
  • When the reconciliation tool compares local and remote sync state
  • When bulk sync or remove actions are triggered from the WP admin list tables
  • When the scheduled WP-Cron task checks for expired content

No data is transmitted until you connect your site with a valid Sideconvo API key.

What data is sent to Sideconvo?

When the plugin syncs content, the following data is sent to Sideconvo’s servers:

  • Post or term ID (used as the unique record identifier)
  • Post or term title
  • Post or term URL
  • Post or term body content (HTML)
  • Featured image URL
  • Last modified timestamp
  • Your site’s namespace (derived from your API key)

Data Processing

All content indexing and AI processing is handled on Sideconvo’s servers. Sideconvo uses this data to:

  • Index your content in a vector database for semantic search
  • Power the voice and chat agent that responds to visitor queries
  • Maintain sync state between your WordPress site and the platform

Privacy & Terms

Your Responsibilities

As a site owner using this plugin, you are responsible for:

  • Informing your visitors that your site content is indexed by Sideconvo’s AI platform
  • Including Sideconvo’s privacy policy information in your site’s privacy documentation
  • Obtaining necessary user consent per applicable privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)
  • Ensuring compliance with your local data protection laws

Service Provider

Sideconvo AI

Stripe

The Sideconvo platform, which is loaded via an iframe inside the plugin’s admin interface, uses Stripe for payment processing. Stripe JavaScript is loaded within that iframe context to handle billing for Sideconvo subscriptions.

No payment data is collected or transmitted by this WordPress plugin directly — all Stripe interactions occur entirely within the Sideconvo platform iframe.

Source Code

The JavaScript and CSS in assets/build/ are compiled from source with @wordpress/scripts (webpack). The uncompiled source is included in this plugin package so it can be reviewed and rebuilt:

  • Source files: src/
  • Build config: package.json, webpack.config.js, tsconfig.json, babel.config.js
  • Build steps:
    1. npm install
    2. npm run build
  • Output: npm run build regenerates assets/build/index.js (the wp-admin app bundle) and assets/build/blocks.js (the Gutenberg block), along with their accompanying CSS/asset-manifest files.

Installation

  1. Upload the plugin files to /wp-content/plugins/sideconvo/, or install directly from the WordPress Plugins screen by searching for “Sideconvo”
  2. Activate the plugin through the Plugins screen in WordPress
  3. Navigate to the Sideconvo menu in your wp-admin sidebar
  4. Click Connect to Sideconvo and sign in with your API key
  5. Select the content types you want your AI agent to know about
  6. Wait a moment for the initial indexing to complete — your agent is ready

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Sideconvo account?

Yes. Sign up at platform.sideconvo.ai to get your API key. A free plan is available to get started.

How much does Sideconvo cost?

Pricing details are at sideconvo.ai/pricing — plans are available for sites of all sizes.

What content can I index?

Posts, pages, custom post types, and taxonomies (categories, tags, and custom taxonomies). You choose exactly which types to include.

Can I exclude specific content?

Yes. Use the Sideconvo metabox on any post or term edit screen to exclude that item, set an expiration date, or override the default sync behaviour.

Does it work with scheduled posts?

Yes. If a post is scheduled, you can set an expiry date from the metabox before it publishes. When WordPress auto-publishes the post, Sideconvo automatically indexes it — no manual action needed.

What languages does it support?

Sideconvo works with WPML and Polylang. Each language version of your content is handled independently, so visitors always get answers in the right language.

What happens if the Sideconvo API is unavailable?

The plugin includes a graceful fallback to WordPress native search, so your visitors’ search experience is never broken even during a temporary outage.

Is my data secure?

All communication with Sideconvo uses encrypted HTTPS connections. Your API key is stored securely in WordPress options and is never exposed in the browser.

How do I enable debug logging?

Add the following line to your wp-config.php: define( 'SIDECONVO_DEBUG_LOG', true ); When enabled, the plugin writes diagnostic entries to your PHP error log. Leave this undefined or set to false on production sites.

What happens if I deactivate the plugin?

Your sync data is preserved. Reactivating the plugin will resume syncing from where it left off.

What happens if I uninstall the plugin?

All plugin data — sync state and settings — is permanently deleted from WordPress. Your content remains in Sideconvo’s database.

Where can I get help?

Visit sideconvo.ai or reach out via the support tab on this page.

Changelog

Fixes a critical data-loss bug in reconciliation, a security hardening, and several large-site reliability issues (timeouts, misleading progress). Also fixes sync loops, a Retry-button crash, and an RTL admin layout issue. Update recommended for all sites.

1.4.2

  • Fixed a critical bug where reconciliation could delete previously-indexed content from Sideconvo before its replacement was guaranteed to be re-added, risking permanent data loss on large sites if the browser tab was closed or the connection dropped mid-sync
  • Fixed a related issue where the “Pages Indexed” count could mask genuinely missing content behind a stale cached number
  • Fixed the reconciliation error banner’s “Retry” button crashing instead of retrying
  • Fixed configuring fields for an unchecked content type silently saving that selection immediately, with no chance to review or undo it via “Save Changes”
  • Hardened the invalid-API-key admin banner to require the manage_options capability, matching the plugin’s other admin notices
  • Hardened the API key debug tool to mask the key immediately on capture, not just when displayed
  • Fixed the “reset sync data” action not clearing all of its local browser storage keys, which could leave stale state behind
  • Fixed the “Retry” button after a sync error sometimes restarting a full reconciliation cycle instead of resuming the sync already in progress
  • Fixed returning to the Sync screen sometimes restarting a full reconciliation cycle while a sync was already running in the background
  • Fixed the “Queue missing items” action failing with a server error on very large sites (tens of thousands of items)
  • Fixed a sync retry not re-attempting a previously failed pre-delete step, which could leave stale content behind after a transient error
  • Improved the reliability of bulk delete operations: a partially failed batch is no longer treated as fully successful
  • Hardened the platform connection flow against a cross-origin message-spoofing risk
  • Added an opt-in option for site owners to also remove this site’s indexed content from Sideconvo when uninstalling the plugin
  • Fixed the sync progress banner showing a misleadingly low percentage on large, only-partially-discovered sites, and added a notice prompting a fresh “Check & Sync” when more undiscovered content remains
  • Fixed reconciliation sometimes timing out on very large sites when starting a sync check
  • Fixed the plugin’s left navigation sidebar rendering behind WordPress’s own admin menu on right-to-left (Arabic/Hebrew) sites

1.4.1

  • Confirmed compatibility with WordPress 7.1
  • Fixed a plugin activation failure on MySQL/MariaDB versions without STORED generated column support (e.g. MySQL 5.5/5.6), found during WordPress.org’s plugin review — the database table now falls back safely, and the internal DB version is no longer marked as current when table creation fails
  • Added a “Configure Fields” mapping UI on the Content Types screen for both post types and taxonomies — map custom fields and taxonomy term meta into the markdown synced to Sideconvo, with a live post preview, bulk field add, per-type/per-taxonomy configuration, and automatic re-sync of mapped content
  • Added support for overriding the locked “Body” field mapping with a custom field, and added “Post Excerpt” as a selectable content source — fixes page-builder and block-based custom post types whose main content isn’t just article text
  • Fixed reordering the locked Title/Body (or Name/Description) row in Configure Fields not being saved — it always snapped back to the top
  • Fixed saving a field mapping for an unchecked content type not automatically selecting that content type for sync
  • Fixed post types hidden from wp-admin (show_ui=false) being listed as eligible for sync on the Content Types screen
  • Fixed an invalid/expired API key auth loop caused by inconsistent detection, phantom re-login prompts, and a missing proactive auth check on iframe-only pages
  • Fixed incremental reconciliation undercounting unrecognized (foreign) items
  • Fixed a MySQL “Can’t reopen table” error occurring in the sync status endpoint on WPML sites
  • Improved reconciliation safety: content on Sideconvo with no local sync history is no longer auto-deleted
  • Redesigned the Unrecognized Items modal with collapsed, grouped-by-source review and a weighted confirmation step before deleting
  • Fixed the “Pages Indexed” count undercounting, and stale site/URL details being shown, for backfilled unrecognized items
  • Added an admin notice when Sideconvo’s database table fails to create, so a broken sync setup is surfaced instead of failing silently
  • Fixed sync items showing a generic failure message instead of the actual error when a sync attempt failed
  • Added X-Site-URL and X-Plugin-Version headers to every Sideconvo API request (previously sent only on key validation) to support API-key-to-site binding
  • Fixed array-shaped custom field and term meta values appearing as the literal text “Array” instead of their actual content when mapped into synced markdown
  • Fixed blank lines, whitespace-only values (e.g. non-breaking-space-only content), and empty array values appearing in synced markdown instead of being omitted
  • Fixed notification banners (success, error, and info messages) not appearing in the admin interface
  • Fixed the content type filter dropdown not closing correctly when pressing Escape
  • Content Types screen now shows detected language(s) even on single-language sites; the widget’s language auto-detection attribute is only added on genuinely multilingual sites (WPML/Polylang)
  • Improved field discovery performance on the Content Types screen
  • Fixed semantic search not intercepting results on themes that run a secondary/facet-count search query alongside the main one
  • Fixed the search integration sending empty queries to the Sideconvo API
  • Fixed the Search Playground showing post type badges in the current admin language instead of the actual post type label
  • Fixed the Agent Playground iframe being blocked by the plugin’s own Content-Security-Policy header on some environments
  • Hardened admin search queries and replaced a deprecated WordPress function call, per WordPress.org Plugin Check requirements
  • Fixed: plugin package now bundles the human-readable source (src/, build config) for assets/build/index.js and assets/build/blocks.js, and README documents how to rebuild it, per WordPress.org’s plugin directory guidelines
  • Fixed the “sync table missing” admin notice disappearing after an hour and silently re-appearing on a timer even after being resolved — it’s now a persistent banner (like the invalid-API-key notice) that only clears once the database table actually exists again

1.3.6

  • Fixed Sync progress display resetting to 0% when returning to the Sync page during an active sync
  • Fixed Splash screen missing callback_url parameter; platform iframe return flows now use the full callback URL instead of the generic WP admin URL
  • Fixed unauthorized API responses (expired or invalid API key) in sync and reconciliation now correctly reset auth state and redirect to the splash screen, matching existing site-disabled handling
  • Updated sidebar Conversations section and Agent Playground to use the correct feature flags for access gating

1.3.5

  • Fixed scheduled posts not syncing to Sideconvo when WordPress auto-publishes them via WP-Cron; a dedicated future_to_publish hook now handles this transition reliably
  • Fixed the Sideconvo metabox showing “Draft” state instead of a “Scheduled” badge for scheduled posts; editors can now set an expiry date on a scheduled post before it goes live
  • Fixed bulk “Sync to Sideconvo” not clearing the excluded flag — items previously removed via “Remove from Sideconvo” now correctly show as Synced after a successful re-sync
  • Fixed content types selected during the setup wizard not being persisted immediately, which prevented WP list table bulk actions and the Sideconvo Status column from appearing without an extra save on the Content Types page
  • Added First and Last page navigation buttons to the Sync screen pagination for easier navigation on large content sets
  • Improved plan feature enforcement: subscription features are now cached server-side with a short-lived transient and re-validated automatically, preventing feature access bypass via direct database edits
  • Improved post-upgrade flow: confirming a subscription upgrade now navigates to the Overview and refreshes plan state automatically, so the new plan is reflected immediately without a manual page reload
  • Updated plugin title on the WordPress.org directory to “Sideconvo Voice & Chat Agent for WordPress”

1.3.4

  • Improved sync-stats polling: batch and stats polling are now on separate intervals (5 s and 15 s respectively) to reduce redundant API calls
  • Improved search cache: removed unused all_ids field from cache payload; bumped cache key to v5; cache is now invalidated on post status change
  • Improved widget options reset: face_custom_logo, language_mode, language, and language_fixed are now included in reset_all
  • Fixed bulk exclude and bulk sync actions in the WP list table not processing correctly
  • Fixed misleading spinner and queued indicator in the sidebar when local and indexed counts differ

1.3.3

  • Removed background WP-Cron job (sideconvo_background_sync) — sync is now driven exclusively by the frontend polling loop
  • Removed stale legacy cron cleanup entries from uninstall for hooks that were never actively scheduled
  • Added activation-path cleanup to remove any lingering sideconvo_background_sync cron event left over from plugin upgrades without deactivation
