Privacy Policy

This plugin does not collect, store, or transmit any user data outside your WordPress installation. All images are stored in your WordPress media library. No external services are used.
Custom Profile Picture – Replace Gravatar with Your Own Images uses Appsero SDK to collect some telemetry data upon user’s confirmation. This helps us to troubleshoot problems faster & make product improvements.

Appsero SDK does not gather any data by default. The SDK only starts gathering basic telemetry data when a user allows it via the admin notice. We collect the data to ensure a great user experience for all our users.

Integrating Appsero SDK DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY start gathering data, without confirmation from users in any case.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with Gravatar?

Yes! The plugin replaces Gravatar with custom images. If no custom image is uploaded, the default Gravatar will still show.

What image formats are supported?

All standard web formats: JPEG, JPG, PNG, and GIF.

What’s the recommended image size?

We recommend 150×150 pixels for optimal display across all devices.

Can users upload their own profile pictures?

Yes! Users can upload their own pictures from their profile page. Admins can manage all user pictures from the centralized dashboard.

Will this affect my site’s performance?

No! The plugin is lightweight and only loads on relevant admin pages. Images are stored in WordPress media library using WordPress’s own optimization.

Can I bulk upload profile pictures?

Yes! Use the “Profile Pictures” admin page to manage multiple users quickly from one interface.

Does it work with BuddyPress or other profile plugins?

Yes, if they use WordPress’s standard get_avatar() function. The plugin integrates with WordPress’s core avatar system.

Can I remove a custom profile picture?

Absolutely! Just click the “Remove” button on the admin page or delete it from the user’s profile page. The avatar will revert to Gravatar.

Is the plugin translation ready?

Yes! All strings are translatable using WordPress’s translation system.

Does it work with multisite?

Yes! The plugin is multisite compatible.

Changelog

CRITICAL PERFORMANCE UPDATE! Fixes massive database query issues that caused slow page loads. Reduces queries by up to 90%. If you experienced performance problems with previous versions, this update is essential. Highly recommended for all users!

1.0.7

  • FIXED: Fatal error (Illegal offset type in isset or empty) when the get_avatar_url filter received a WP_User/WP_Post/WP_Comment object instead of a numeric ID. This crashed the block editor (and any REST request preloading /wp/v2/users/me). All avatar filters now resolve every $id_or_email shape — integer ID, email, WP_User, WP_Post, and WP_Comment — to a numeric user ID before use.
  • FIXED: pre_get_avatar_data handler read the user ID from the wrong filter argument, so custom avatars were never injected via that path. It now reads the correct $id_or_email argument.

1.0.6

  • FIXED: [custom_profile_picture] shortcode upload now works for all logged-in users. The crop-save AJAX handler previously required the upload_files capability, which Subscribers (the primary audience of the frontend shortcode) do not have, causing a “Permission denied” error. Users can now always update their own picture, while editing another user’s picture still requires the edit_user capability.
  • FIXED: [custom_profile_picture] shortcode assets (cropper scripts/styles) now load in block (FSE) themes. Previously the enqueue was gated on has_shortcode($post->post_content), which fails when the shortcode lives in a block template, template part, or synced pattern, leaving the uploader non-functional. Assets are now enqueued directly from the shortcode render.

1.0.5

  • FIXED: get_avatar_url and pre_get_avatar_data filters now correctly resolve any $id_or_email value (integer ID, email string, or WP_Comment object), so custom avatars display properly on the frontend in all contexts.
  • NEW: [custom_profile_picture] shortcode — lets logged-in users upload, crop, and remove their own profile picture on any public page without admin access.
  • NEW: AJAX remove action available on the frontend (custprofpic_frontend_remove_picture).
  • NEW: Dedicated frontend CSS (frontend-profile.css) and JS (frontend-upload.js) — loaded only on pages that contain the shortcode.
    Added – Appsero insight vendor
Critical Performance Update – Highly Recommended

  • FIXED: Massive database query optimization – eliminated expensive attachment_url_to_postid() calls

  • PERFORMANCE: Reduced database queries by up to 90% on pages with multiple avatars
  • OPTIMIZED: Added object caching to prevent repeated queries for same user
  • IMPROVED: Ensured attachment ID is always stored when uploading profile pictures
  • FIXED: Removed duplicate admin notice hook that could cause unnecessary notices
  • ENHANCED: Better performance on comment sections and user listing pages

This update addresses user concerns about excessive database queries. If you experienced slow page loads with previous versions, this update will significantly improve performance.
