About AI Search for WooCommerce

From the official readme · v1.41.1

Description

Your shoppers describe what they want. Default WooCommerce search returns: 0 results.

  • “summer wedding guest dress”
  • “warm cotton sweater for winter”
  • “outfit for a first date”
  • “cozy loungewear for weekends”
  • “wireless headphones for running”

Every product she was looking for is on your store: light cotton midi dresses, cashmere pullovers, tailored blazers, oversized hoodies, sweat-resistant earbuds. Default search just couldn’t connect vague words to product names. She leaves. Sale lost.

AI Search fixes it. Semantic search that understands what customers mean, not just what they type. Same store, same theme, same checkout. Search just works.

Same queries with AI Search, products found:

  • ✅ “summer wedding guest dress” → Light midi wraps, pastel jumpsuits, formal linen sets
  • ✅ “warm cotton sweater for winter” → Merino pullovers, cable knits, cashmere blends
  • ✅ “outfit for a first date” → Blazers, tailored dresses, leather boots
  • ✅ “cozy loungewear for weekends” → Oversized hoodies, joggers, cotton sweatpants
  • ✅ “wireless headphones for running” → Sweat-resistant earbuds, sport-fit models

Not just WooCommerce. AI Search works on any WordPress site: blog posts, pages, documentation, directories, any public custom post type. Wherever visitors search, semantic matching finds what they meant.

Try it live before installing: wp-search.ai/demos runs this exact plugin on three sample stores. Type your own search, or a SKU, and see the traditional results next to the AI results, side by side:

  • Clothing store – users describe an occasion, not a product name
  • Bookstore – readers remember the theme, never the exact title
  • Electronics – model codes and specs, where exact SKU matching has to win
  • Live search dropdown – type in the box and watch results appear before you finish

Traditional Results First, AI Results After

AI Search never replaces the results your search already finds. It adds to them. Every search runs in three steps, in this order:

  1. Exact matches: a query that matches a product SKU or an exact product title is always the first result.
  2. Traditional keyword results: everything WordPress and WooCommerce search would normally find (products literally containing your search words) comes next, ranked by keyword relevance instead of publish date.
  3. AI results: only below those. Semantic matches are added: products that mean the same thing even when they use different words.

So if a user searches for something that literally exists on your site, they see exactly what they would see without the plugin, just better ordered. The AI layer only ever extends the results with products the traditional search missed. Installing AI Search will not change or hide the results your customers already find today.

Search As You Type

Two optional blocks bring live results to your site, without sending your visitors to a results page first:

  • AI Search Box: a search field that shows results in a dropdown as the user types: thumbnail, product title and price on a single row.
  • AI Search Button: a search icon for your header or menu that opens a full-screen search overlay.

Both are Gutenberg blocks. Open any page, template or header in the editor, click the + button, search for “AI Search”, and place the one you want – there is nothing to configure to get started.

They follow the same “traditional first” rule as the results page: keyword and SKU matches appear instantly on every keystroke, and AI suggestions are added underneath when typing pauses.

Try the live search demo – three real catalogues, type anything you like.

This keeps your quota intact. Keystrokes cost nothing, only the pause triggers a single AI request. A ten-character search uses one embedding, not ten.

Both blocks read your theme’s own colours, fonts and corner radius, so they look like part of your site rather than something bolted on, on light and dark themes alike. They are fully keyboard and screen-reader accessible. And they are entirely optional: place one where you want it, or place none and nothing about your site changes.

Key Features

  • Search As You Type: Optional search box and search button blocks with a live results dropdown, keyword matches instantly, AI suggestions on pause.
  • WooCommerce Product Search: Full product catalog indexing, titles, short and long descriptions, SKUs, categories, tags, and product attributes (size, color, material, etc.). Pre-configured defaults so you can go live in minutes.
  • Understands Meaning, Not Just Keywords: Semantic search means “cozy winter sweater” matches your “merino wool pullover”. Long-tail and descriptive queries stop returning empty pages.
  • Traditional Results Are Never Lost: Keyword matches always rank above AI suggestions. The AI extends your search results. It never replaces them.
  • Cross-Lingual & Multilingual: Works with 100+ languages, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Greek, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and more. International stores get consistent search quality across every language, and an English query can still match content in other languages.
  • SKU & Attribute Matching: Customers can search by SKU fragments, attribute values, or technical specs and still find the right product.
  • Smart Fallback System: 4-tier fallback ensures users never hit a zero-result page, if AI search finds nothing, standard WordPress search takes over automatically.
  • No OpenAI Account Required: Uses our free embedding service (up to 10,000 embeddings per site). Works out of the box for most stores.
  • Bring Your Own API Key: Optionally use your own OpenAI API key for unlimited indexing.
  • Bulk Embedding Generation: Index your entire existing catalog in one click, filtered by post type or category.
  • Quota Management: Real-time monitoring of AI service usage and limits (v1.14.0+).
  • Works Beyond Products Too: Same intelligent search for blog posts, pages, and any public custom post type.
  • ACF Compatible: Index Advanced Custom Fields data for deeper product metadata search.
  • Tunable Similarity Threshold: Fine-tune how strict or broad search results are, per store.
  • Intelligent Caching: Fast results with automatic local caching.

AI Search Works With Any WooCommerce Store

  • Fashion & apparel: “something flowy for a summer wedding” finds dresses; attribute-aware queries like “cotton breathable large” match by size and material
  • Beauty & skincare: “my skin looks tired” finds night creams and recovery oils; “gift for sensitive skin” finds hypoallergenic sets
  • Electronics: “wireless headphones for running” finds sweat-resistant earbuds; exact SKUs like WOO-HOOD-24 are always pinned first, no guessing
  • Home & garden: “cozy living room” finds rugs, lamps, throw pillows; “durable outdoor” finds weather-resistant furniture
  • Food & beverage: “healthy snacks for kids” finds low-sugar options across your catalogue
  • Books & media: readers remember themes, plots and moods, rarely exact titles: “coming-of-age novel set in Japan” finds what keyword search never would
  • B2B & wholesale: semantic queries like “cotton shirts bulk order” work the same way; your existing WooCommerce pricing rules and role-based visibility still apply
  • Knowledge bases & directories: long-tail help queries stop hitting empty pages; “how to reduce hosting costs” finds “cutting your server bill in half”

Works With The Plugins Your Store Already Uses

  • WooCommerce: products, variations, virtual products, categories, tags, brand taxonomy, product attributes (size, color, material, etc.)
  • ACF (Free and Pro): text, textarea, WYSIWYG, repeaters, and group fields; opt-in via the Custom Fields tab
  • Meta Box, Pods, JetEngine: text fields exposed through standard WordPress meta APIs are picked up automatically; more via the ai_search_embedding_content filter
  • WPML and Polylang: separate embeddings per language: a Portuguese query finds Portuguese products, not the English original
  • Page builders: Gutenberg native. Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder and Bricks content is indexed wherever it lands in post_content
  • Any WordPress theme: the plugin extends your existing search template; no theme changes needed

How It Works

  1. Each product in your WooCommerce catalog is converted into a numeric “meaning fingerprint” (called an embedding) that captures its title, description, SKU, categories, tags, and attributes.
  2. When a user searches, the plugin first pins exact SKU/title matches, then lists every traditional keyword match (what your search finds today), ranked by relevance.
  3. The query then gets its own meaning fingerprint, which is compared against every product’s fingerprint.
  4. The closest semantic matches are appended below the traditional results, extra products the keyword search missed, never replacements for it.
  5. If nothing at all is found, a multi-tier fallback kicks in so users never hit an empty results page.

Embeddings are generated automatically when you publish or update products, no manual work after setup.

Installation

  1. Install and activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  2. The setup wizard launches automatically. If you have WooCommerce active, it will detect your store and pre-select the most useful product fields (short description, categories, attributes, SKU).
  3. Run Bulk Embedding Generation from AI Search > Generate Embeddings to index your existing product catalog (or posts/pages).
  4. That’s it, new and updated products get indexed automatically from this point on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate from Relevanssi, SearchWP, or FiboSearch?

Yes, and there is no migration to do. AI Search runs alongside your existing search plugin during testing. Install it, click Sync content in the setup screen, and the traditional results your current plugin provides continue exactly as before, AI results are added below them, never on top. If the AI layer doesn’t work for you, deactivate AI Search and your previous plugin keeps working as if nothing happened. Most stores test both in parallel for a week and decide.

How is AI Search different from SearchWP or Relevanssi?

Relevanssi and SearchWP are keyword-quality plugins. They rank keyword matches better than WordPress default (title weighting, stemming, relevance boosts). AI Search does something keyword search cannot do: it finds products that mean the same thing as the query even when they share zero keywords with it. “Cozy winter sweater” finds “merino wool pullover”. Relevanssi and SearchWP can’t, because no keyword overlaps. In practice, many stores that already run keyword-quality search still benefit from AI Search because it fills the long-tail: queries WordPress and its keyword extensions cannot…

How is AI Search different from FiboSearch (Ajax Search for WooCommerce)?

FiboSearch focuses on live dropdown UX, great AJAX search-as-you-type, styled results panel. AI Search does both: an AI Search Box block with keyword matches on every keystroke plus AI semantic suggestions on pause, AND a semantic layer on the main results page. If you’re happy with FiboSearch’s dropdown, install AI Search without a block, you keep FiboSearch’s UI, and the results page silently picks up semantic matches. If you want a single-plugin setup, remove FiboSearch and place the AI Search Box block, same live dropdown experience, plus semantic ranking behind it.

How is AI Search different from Elasticsearch or Algolia setups?

Elasticsearch and Algolia are search infrastructure: you configure indexes, ranking rules, synonyms, typo tolerance, boost rules. Powerful. Also heavy, and typically needs a dedicated search team. AI Search is a drop-in semantic layer for stores that don’t have one: one-click sync from the plugin admin, no ranking rules to write, no index to manage. Under the hood we use vector embeddings (text-embedding-3-small on the free tier, text-embedding-3-large on paid) but you never see any of that. If you already run Elasticsearch or Algolia with a real search team, AI Search is probably not for…

Is there a live demo?

Yes – four. wp-search.ai/demos runs the real plugin on a clothing store, a bookstore and an electronics store, each with its own catalogue. Type any query – your own words, an exact product name, or a SKU – and the page shows traditional search results and AI Search results side by side, each result labeled by tier. You can also drag the similarity threshold and watch the AI results change live. There is also a live search demo for the dropdown: type into any of the three boxes and watch keyword matches appear as you type, with the AI suggestions joining when you pause. Nothing on any of…

How do I add the live search dropdown to my site?

The plugin ships two blocks. Edit any page, template or header in the block editor, click the + button and search for “AI Search”. Pick AI Search Box for a search field with a dropdown, or AI Search Button for a search icon that opens a full-screen overlay – the button works well in a site header. There is nothing to configure to get started, though you can turn thumbnails, prices and the result count on or off in the block sidebar. See both in action.

Do the search blocks use up my embedding quota?

Barely. Every keystroke runs a keyword and SKU search, which uses no embeddings at all. Only when the user stops typing does the plugin make a single AI request. So a ten-character search costs one embedding, not ten – and repeated searches are served from a five-minute cache, costing nothing.

Do I have to use the blocks?

No. They are entirely optional. If you place no block, your site is untouched, no extra scripts load, and the plugin works exactly as it did before – improving the results page users reach after pressing Enter.

Will the search blocks match my theme?

Yes. They read your theme’s own colour palette, typography and corner radius settings rather than shipping a fixed design, so they look native on light and dark themes alike. If you use a block theme, you can also adjust spacing and alignment from the block editor as usual.

Will installing AI Search change the results my visitors already get?

No. Results your search already finds are kept and shown first: exact SKU/title matches, then every traditional keyword match (ranked by relevance instead of date). AI results are only added below them: extra content the keyword search missed. If a user searches for something that literally exists on your site, they will still find it, in the same or a better position.

How do “term embeddings” improve search? (v1.26.0)

On top of the per-post embedding, AI Search now generates one embedding per taxonomy term, every category, tag, and WooCommerce attribute term. At search time, each post’s score gets an additive boost from its best-matching term. The practical effect: a user searching “trainers” surfaces products tagged “Sneakers” even when no product description contains the word “trainers”. You can manage this on the new Term Embeddings tab (opt out of specific taxonomies, bulk-generate embeddings for existing terms) and tune the boost strength via the slider on Search Configuration. Cost note: each unique…

Can developers customize behavior via PHP hooks?

Yes. As of v1.25.0, AI Search exposes the following filters for developers: ai_search_embedding_content: Modify the text sent to the AI provider when generating embeddings. Useful for injecting taxonomy names, stripping boilerplate, or normalizing terminology. ai_search_should_generate_embedding: Return false to skip embedding generation for specific posts. Useful for excluding drafts in certain categories or low-content posts. ai_search_query_before_embedding: Rewrite the user’s search query before it’s embedded. Useful for synonym expansion, spell correction, or locale-specific…

Does this work with WooCommerce products?

Yes, WooCommerce is the primary use case. The plugin indexes product titles, short and long descriptions, SKUs, categories, tags, and product attributes. When you activate the plugin on a store with WooCommerce, the setup wizard automatically prioritizes products and pre-selects the most useful product fields.

Can shoppers search by SKU?

Yes, and as of v1.27.0 an exact or prefix SKU match is always returned first, regardless of the AI similarity score. Random-looking codes like B08M5XDKFG carry no meaning for an embedding model, so before the semantic step the plugin checks the query against product SKUs (including variation SKUs, which resolve to their parent product) and against exact product titles. Matches are pinned to the top with a green “Exact Match” badge for editors. Partial SKUs work when the query is a single token of 4+ characters (WOO-HOOD finds WOO-HOODIE, WOO-HOODIE-LOGO, …). SKUs remain part of the embedding…

Does it work with WooCommerce product attributes?

Yes. Attributes like size, color, material, and any custom attributes you configure are indexed as part of the product’s searchable content. Shoppers can search by attribute values (“large cotton”) and the plugin will match products with those attributes.

Does it index product variations?

The plugin indexes the parent product (including its attributes and description). Individual variation-level descriptions aren’t separately indexed, but since attributes like size and color are included in the parent’s embedding, searches for variation-specific terms still surface the right product.

What is required to use AI Search?

Nothing if you use our free AI Search Service (up to 10,000 embeddings per site). If you want unlimited indexing, you can use your own OpenAI API key.

What happens if the embedding API fails?

The plugin logs the error and falls back to WordPress default search automatically, so users never hit a broken search page.

When are embeddings generated?

Embeddings are automatically generated when you publish a post, page, or custom post type. You can also regenerate them manually from the post editor or bulk generate them from the settings page.

Will this slow down my website?

No. Embeddings are generated in the background when content is published, not during searches. Search results are fast because they use pre-computed embeddings stored in your database.

Changelog

1.41.1

  • Fixed: Test Search tab was returning the same results on both sides. The AI Search filter has an is_admin() short-circuit that keeps semantic ranking off the wp-admin search screens (Posts list, Media library, etc.). Because the Test Search tab runs its comparison from inside a wp-admin AJAX call, that short-circuit fired for the AI query too, so both columns showed the raw WordPress results and merchants saw no difference. The filter now honours an ai_search_force_run WP_Query var that the Test Search tab sets on its AI query, unblocking the semantic pipeline for that specific call. Other admin-side searches are unaffected.

1.41.0

  • Signed bypass mechanism for support diagnostics. A search request carrying ?ai_search_bypass=1 plus an Authorization: Bearer <site_token> header now skips the AI pipeline entirely and returns native WordPress results. Only the site’s own service token grants access, so nobody else can silently disable the plugin. Used by the AI Search Service sweep to measure “same site with AI on vs off” back-to-back, quantifying the plugin’s real per-host overhead.
  • Smaller embedding storage. Each embedding dimension is now rounded to 4 decimal places at write time. Resulting JSON is ~30% smaller, so MySQL data transfer and PHP json_decode() on the hot search path both drop proportionally. Cosine similarity difference vs 6-decimal values is <0.0001, far below any real ranking threshold. Backward compatible: existing JSON reads exactly as before, no migration required, storage shrinks naturally as posts are re-indexed on future publishes.

1.40.1

  • Listing rewrite: pain-first description opening with concrete shopper queries, dedicated “Works with any WooCommerce store” section covering 8 verticals, integration name-drops (ACF, Meta Box, Pods, JetEngine, WPML, Polylang, Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder, Bricks), and four new comparison FAQs answering “how is this different from Relevanssi / SearchWP / FiboSearch / Elasticsearch”. Copy pass to drop em-dashes and tighten clauses. No code change.

1.40.0

  • New: one-click “Sync content” setup. The five-step setup wizard is gone. In its place, a single screen that auto-detects everything (post types, custom fields, product taxonomies) and shows one button, “Sync content”. Custom fields default to all public meta_keys, term embeddings auto-enable on WooCommerce stores, and progress is live across every content type. The old “Advanced settings” link opens the existing Content tab for anyone who wants to prune. Existing users’ pruning is respected, auto-populate only fills post types that were never configured.
  • Brand-styled sync experience: single card with circular progress ring (purple→pink gradient), on-brand typography, pill cards per content type that light up as each one finishes, and a green check mark when done. Matches the look of wp-search.ai rather than the wp-admin form idiom.
  • Persistent “Sync content” nudge in wp-admin. As long as the site has content but zero embeddings, every wp-admin page shows a small brand-styled notice with a one-click CTA to the sync page. No dismiss button, the nudge disappears automatically the moment the very first embedding lands. Editors and lower users never see it. Data-driven: two indexed LIMIT-1 lookups per page load, cached per-request.
  • Translations for the 34 new msgids across pt_PT, pt_BR, es_ES, fr_FR, de_DE, it_IT, nl_NL, ja (each catalog now at 663 translated messages, 0 fuzzy).

1.39.0

  • New: “Before you leave” survey on plugin deactivation. When you deactivate AI Search from the Plugins screen, a small modal asks the single most useful question, why. Six one-click options (Too complicated, Poor results, Something broke, Switched to another plugin, Just testing, Other) plus an optional comment. The deactivation itself is never blocked; the modal is a one-screen ask, dismissable in a click. Every answer flows straight to us and shapes the next release.
  • Translations for the 14 new msgids across pt_PT, pt_BR, es_ES, fr_FR, de_DE, it_IT, nl_NL, ja (each catalog now at 629 translated messages, 0 fuzzy).

1.38.1

  • Free plan quota raised: 10,000 embeddings/month (was 2,000), no more daily cap. The service reset was already monthly-based since day one; the label just hadn’t been updated to say so and the numbers were tight enough to feel restrictive during first-day setup. Existing free-tier customers already have the new limits applied; new installs get them out of the box. Standard and Pro tiers are unchanged.
  • Copy correction across the Quota tab and Setup Wizard: “Lifetime total” and “Total Embeddings” now read “This month”. The wording was misleading, the service was resetting used_total back to zero on the anniversary of the origin’s registration for as long as the plugin existed, but the UI called it lifetime. Now it says what it does.
  • Translations for the 3 new msgids across pt_PT, pt_BR, es_ES, fr_FR, de_DE, it_IT, nl_NL, ja (each catalog now at 615 translated messages, 0 fuzzy).
