About TekMedia

From the official readme Β· v2.0.0

Description

TekMedia adds the organisation and cleanup tools the WordPress media library is missing, without asking you to learn a second interface. It looks and behaves like wp-admin, because it is wp-admin.

Organise

  • Unlimited nested folders with drag-and-drop reordering
  • File shortcuts β€” put one file in several folders without a second copy on disk
  • Search across your whole library or inside one folder
  • Select many files at once to move or delete them
  • Replace a file while keeping its URL and attachment ID, so every post using it updates automatically
  • Import openly licensed photos from Openverse, Pexels or Unsplash straight into a folder

Optimise

  • Compress images on your own server β€” no account, no upload to a third party
  • 500 images a month on the free plan, with what is left shown before you start
  • Originals are kept, so any optimization can be undone
  • Filenames, URLs and attachment IDs never change

Clean up safely

  • Scan for files that no post, page, featured image or widget references
  • See exactly where a file is used before you touch it
  • Find duplicates β€” identical files, and the same photo re-uploaded at another size
  • Nothing is ever deleted without a confirmation that states the consequence in plain numbers
  • A recoverable trash: trashed files keep working on your site until you empty it

Name your files properly

  • Alt text, title and caption in one panel, with a completeness meter
  • Suggested filenames derived from your alt text, renamed in one click
  • Bulk rename with a pattern builder, live preview and per-file numbering
  • Old URLs keep working β€” every previous filename 301-redirects to the current one, thumbnails included

Know what you are storing

  • A storage breakdown on your WordPress dashboard, by media type
  • Your largest files, ranked
  • Library entries whose file has gone missing from disk, with a re-upload or remove-entry fix

TekMedia Pro

Every Pro feature’s interface ships inside this plugin, shown in place with a PRO badge. Installing TekMedia Pro unlocks it exactly where it already is β€” no settings move, and nothing has to be set up twice.

  • Cloud storage. Connect Google Drive or Dropbox, browse a folder and import files into TekMedia, optionally keeping them synced.
  • Builder-aware scanning. Deep scans read Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, ACF and Beaver Builder layouts, so a file used only inside a page builder is no longer flagged as unused.
  • Post-type-wide folders. Folders can hold products, posts or any post type you enable, not only media.

TekMedia works fully on its own. Pro is an addition, never a requirement.

Source Code

The JavaScript and CSS in assets/build/ are compiled from the readable sources in assets/src/ using @wordpress/scripts. To rebuild them from a checkout:

npm install && npm run build

Installation

  1. Upload the tekmedia folder to /wp-content/plugins/, or install the plugin through Plugins β†’ Add New.
  2. Activate TekMedia through the Plugins screen.
  3. Open TekMedia in the admin menu. Your existing media is available immediately β€” nothing is moved or modified on activation.
  4. Create your first folder from the sidebar, then drag files into it.

Deactivating TekMedia removes no data. Uninstalling removes your folders and settings only if you opt in first, under TekMedia β†’ Settings β†’ General.

Frequently asked questions

Will TekMedia change or move my existing files?

No. Folders are a layer on top of your media library, not a directory structure on disk. Your files stay exactly where WordPress put them, and every existing URL keeps working. Deactivating the plugin leaves your library as it was.

Are my files deleted when I move them to the trash?

No. Moving a file to the TekMedia trash hides it from your library but leaves the file itself untouched, so any post using it keeps working. Files are only removed permanently when you empty the trash, or when the retention period you set in Settings expires.

What happens to my folders if I deactivate the plugin?

Nothing. Deactivating removes no data. Folder structure, trash contents and settings are all preserved, and only removed on uninstall if you have opted in under Settings.

Does the unused-media scan read page-builder layouts?

No. The free scan reads WordPress post content, featured images and widgets. Files used only inside Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, ACF or Beaver Builder may be flagged as unused, so check those layouts before deleting. Page-builder-aware scanning is a Pro feature.

Where does image optimization happen?

On your own server, using the image library PHP already has. Nothing is uploaded anywhere and no account is needed. That is also why there is a monthly allowance rather than a bill.

Will optimizing break the images already on my pages?

No. Optimizing rewrites the file in place, so the filename, the URL and the attachment ID all stay the same. If compressing a file would make it bigger β€” which happens with images that are already well compressed β€” it is left exactly as it was, and it does not use up part of your allowance.

Can I undo an optimization?

Yes, as long as β€œKeep original files” is on, which it is by default. Each optimized image has its original stored alongside, and Restore puts it back.

Is a shortcut a copy of the file?

No. A shortcut is a pointer, so it uses no extra storage. Deleting a shortcut removes only the pointer β€” the original file, and every other folder showing it, are untouched.

What happens to posts using a duplicate I trash?

They are rewritten to use the file you kept, before the copy is trashed. Featured images, images in content, gallery shortcodes and every generated size are all repointed, so nothing breaks. The copies go to the recoverable trash, not straight to deletion.

Does renaming a file break the pages already using it?

No. Every previous filename is recorded and 301-redirects to the current one, including each generated thumbnail size. Note that this works because a request for a missing file reaches WordPress; if your host serves /wp-content/uploads/ from its own server block without passing through PHP, the redirect cannot run.

Do Pexels and Unsplash need an account?

Openverse does not, and it is the default. Pexels and Unsplash each need a free API key from their developer site, which you paste into Settings. Every imported photo has its credit and licence saved to the caption field automatically.

Do I need TekMedia Pro?

No. TekMedia is complete on its own. Pro adds cloud storage, builder-aware scanning and post-type-wide folders. You can see exactly what it adds before buying, because the interface is already here with a PRO badge on it.

Changelog

Pro features now have their interface built into TekMedia itself, shown locked until TekMedia Pro is installed. Existing folders, trash and settings are untouched. No action needed.

2.0.0

14-09-2026
* Added – The interface for every Pro feature now ships in TekMedia itself, shown locked with a PRO badge. Activating TekMedia Pro unlocks it in place, so nothing moves.
* Added – Settings is now tabbed, with a new Connections tab for cloud storage accounts.
* Added – Cloud storage: connect Google Drive or Dropbox, browse a folder and import files straight into a TekMedia folder, optionally keeping them synced. (Pro)
* Added – Deep, builder-aware unused scanning that reads Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, ACF and Beaver Builder layouts, so files used only inside a page builder are no longer flagged as unused. (Pro)
* Added – Folders can hold any enabled post type, not just media. (Pro)
* Added – Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2 are listed in Connections marked “Coming in v2.1”. They are visible but not functional in this release.
* Improved – The unused media screen now has a scan depth control, and reports how many files a deep scan rescued from the basic scan’s verdict.
* Improved – The library now has post-type tabs, which stay hidden until more than one post type is enabled.

1.2.0

09-09-2026
* Added – Media SEO panel: alt text with a character counter, title and caption, and a completeness meter, inside the media detail dialog.
* Added – Suggested filenames derived from your alt text, with one-click rename.
* Added – Bulk rename with a pattern builder, live preview and per-file numbering.
* Added – Storage analytics on the WordPress dashboard, with a breakdown by media type, your largest files, and how much is flagged as possibly unused.
* Added – Broken media detection: find library entries whose file is missing from disk, then re-upload the file or remove the entry.
* Improved – Renaming a file keeps its old URL working. Every previous name 301-redirects to the current file, including generated thumbnail sizes.

1.1.0

05-09-2026
* Added – Image optimization on your own server, with a 500-image monthly allowance, three compression levels and per-file before and after figures.
* Added – Optimize on upload, bulk optimize in the background, and restore any file to its kept original.
* Added – Media usage tracking: see every post, page, featured image and widget that references a file, and act on it from the same panel.
* Added – Duplicate detection matching both identical files and the same picture re-uploaded at another size, reviewed group by group.
* Added – File shortcuts: place one file in several folders with no extra storage, badged in the library and safe to remove.
* Added – Stock photo import from Openverse, Pexels and Unsplash, filed straight into a folder with the credit saved to the caption.
* Improved – Resolving a duplicate group now moves every reference onto the file you keep, so nothing that used a copy breaks.
* Improved – Trash and restore now carry a file’s shortcuts with it.
* Fixed – A background job could stall after its first batch. Any task needing more than one batch, such as a large scan, stopped one tick in and never resumed.
* Security – Every REST route now declares an explicit permission callback, checked through a single middleware.
* Security – Database queries were reviewed so that every value is bound through a prepared statement.

1.0.0

03-09-2026
* Added – Initial release.
* Added – Unlimited nested folders with drag-and-drop nesting and reordering.
* Added – Grid and list views with folder-scoped search, file-type filtering and sorting.
* Added – Bulk selection that survives pagination, with move-to-folder and move-to-trash.
* Added – Drag files from your desktop onto the library to upload straight into the open folder.
* Added – Replace a file in place, keeping its URL and attachment ID so every post using it updates.
* Added – Unused-media scan that runs in the background and explains why each file was flagged.
* Added – Recoverable trash with per-file restore, restore all, and a retention period you choose.
* Added – Settings for the default view, sort, page size, upload destination, scan batch size and trash retention.
* Added – Full translation support and keyboard-accessible folder tree, tables and dialogs.
