About Chapterwright
From the official readme Β· v2.9.4Description
Chapterwright turns WordPress into a home for multiple, beautifully readable ebooks β each with its own landing page, grouped table of contents, ordered chapters, and a focused reading experience.
It adds two content types, Books and Chapters. Each book can have its own cover, subtitle, accent color, introduction, and table of contents. Chapters can be grouped into sections β each with its own name and description β and get automatic previous/next navigation.
Features
- Publish any number of books.
- Organize chapters into sections, each with its own name and optional description shown in the table of contents.
- Control chapter order, with automatic previous/next navigation.
- Display a book library at
/books/, or embed it anywhere with the[hsrtech_books]shortcode. - Responsive book and chapter templates that use your active theme’s header, footer, and fonts.
- Full block editor, revisions, and REST API support.
- Reader-selectable system, light, or dark color mode.
- Reading progress indicator and estimated reading time per chapter.
- A progress bar on each book’s page for how much of it is published and ready to read.
- Book and Chapter schema.org structured data.
- Accessible skip links, landmarks, focus indicators, and reduced-motion support.
- Styled code blocks (with a dedicated Code Snippet block: syntax coloring, a language label, an optional caption, and a copy button), tables, and a Note block for highlighted notes, warnings, or tips.
- An optional standalone introduction page for any section β write content on the section itself and its table-of-contents heading links there automatically.
- A single Chapterwright admin page to manage every book, its sections, and its chapters β adding, reordering, and reassigning them β without the classic post-type screens’ back-and-forth.
- A Settings page to turn the reader’s color-mode toggle on or off, and edit or remove page headings.
- Registers with the WordPress Abilities API (WordPress 6.9+) so AI agents and automation tools can discover and use the plugin’s book/chapter/section operations in a standardized, permission-checked way.
Who it’s for
Anyone publishing a technical guide, course, documentation set, or serialized book directly on their WordPress site β without standing up a separate platform.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I manage my books and chapters?
Under Chapterwright β Books & Chapters in the admin sidebar β a single-page app for organizing your library: adding books, adding and reordering sections and chapters, and jumping into the block editor to write. The classic Book/Chapter list and edit screens still exist underneath it; nothing about how content is written has changed.
Does this work with any theme?
Yes. The reader uses font-family: inherit throughout, so headings and body text pick up your active themeβs fonts and heading sizes automatically instead of a bundled font stack.
Can I customize the design?
Yes. Visitor-facing styles use a .hsrtech- class prefix and expose a --hsrtech-accent custom property for each bookβs accent color. See βCustom stylingβ in the pluginβs full documentation for how to safely override the bundled stylesheet from a child theme or site-specific plugin without losing changes on update.
Is there a limit to how many books or chapters I can create?
No. Books and Chapters are regular WordPress post types under the hood, so the only limit is your hosting environmentβs usual limits.
What happens if I uninstall the plugin?
Deleting Chapterwright from the Plugins screen performs a full clean sweep: every Book and Chapter (and their metadata), the sections database table, the Book/Chapter capabilities granted to any role, and the pluginβs saved settings are all permanently deleted. Back up your site first if you want to keep any of it. Simply deactivating the plugin does not touch your data β only actually removing it does.
Does this support translations?
Yes. Every string (PHP and the admin appβs JavaScript) is wrapped for translation under the chapterwright text domain.
Changelog
Includes an accessibility pass and a fix for the mobile menu not opening on book/chapter/library pages β recommended for all sites.
2.9.4
- Fixed a code block’s background color changing per line when “Show line numbers” or “Highlight lines” was on β a styling side effect of the 2.9.3 fix for the “…” corruption bug, where each line’s code element started picking up unrelated inline-code styling.
2.9.3
- Fixed a draft chapter or section’s Preview link (both the block editor’s own “Preview” button and the admin app’s “View” action) redirecting to the live URL and 404ing instead of showing the draft.
- Fixed a bare URL showing up as the floating “table of contents” button’s accessible text in some SEO/accessibility auditing tools.
- Fixed “…” (three dots, as in a code spread operator) silently turning into a single “⦔ character inside a Code Snippet block whenever “Show line numbers” or “Highlight lines” was on.
- Fixed chapter numbers leaving a permanent gap after a chapter was permanently deleted (e.g. a section and its chapters removed together) β remaining chapters are now automatically renumbered with no gap.
- Enriched the author
Personschema.org data on Book/Chapter/Section pages with optional LinkedIn/GitHub links β add them under your user profile’s new “LinkedIn URL”/”GitHub URL” fields.
2.9.2
- Added a progress bar to each book’s page showing how much of it is published and ready to read β counts published chapters against every chapter assigned to the book, drafts included. Shown below the title, on by default; turn it off in Settings under “Book progress bar”.
2.9.1
- Fixed a crash (“Something went wrong loading this screen”) right after adding a chapter in the Books & Chapters admin app β the new chapter was actually created fine, but the screen broke until a refresh. Only affected sites with “Table of contents excerpts” shown in the admin app’s chapter list.
2.9.0
- Section (module) URLs are now nested under their book,
/books/{book-slug}/{section-slug}/, matching a chapter’s own URL shape. - “Start reading” now opens a book’s first section’s own introduction page when it has one, instead of always jumping straight to the first chapter.
- Previous/next chapter navigation now stops at a section’s own introduction page when advancing into or out of that section, instead of skipping past it.
- The floating table of contents button, missing from a section’s own introduction page, has been added.
- Sections now start as a draft when created, the same as a new chapter β publish from the Block Editor when ready.
- Added a “Table of contents section descriptions” setting to show or hide each section’s description in the table of contents list (on by default).
2.8.9
- Sections can now have their own optional introduction page β write it from a section’s own Block Editor screen (like a chapter) and its table-of-contents heading links there automatically. A section with nothing written keeps working exactly as before.
- A section’s introduction page now paginates like a chapter page, leading straight into its first chapter and back to whichever chapter came right before it, instead of only linking back to the table of contents.
- Chapter URLs moved from
/book-chapter/{slug}/to/books/{book-slug}/{chapter-slug}/, nested under their book. An old bookmarked link still works. - Table-of-contents section headings now match a chapter row’s own link styling (no underline, accent color on hover) instead of a plain underlined link.
- A section’s edit screen now returns to the right book when you leave it, the same way a book or chapter’s edit screen already does.
- Hardened the section data migration to be safely retryable, and tightened the public table of contents to never show a draft section’s heading.
