About Backpilot
From the official readme · v1.1.0Description
Backpilot puts an AI shopping concierge on your storefront — it finds the right products, answers from your catalog and fills the cart. Backpilot engages visitors 24/7 with shopping assistance in the shopper’s own language.
💬 What it looks like for a shopper
Shoppers ask. Your store answers.
-
Shoppers open the chat and ask in their own words — size, color, budget, use case.
-
The concierge returns real products with accurate variations, stock and price, gives recommendations, and answers questions.
-
Finally, it fills the cart and hands the shopper to your store’s own checkout.
The concierge rides along as your shopper browses — it knows the page they’re on and works with your store, not beside it.
- Knows the current page. On a product page, a shopper simply asks “does this come in blue?” or “something like this” and it just works — no naming products, no pasting links.
- The conversation follows along. The panel stays open while the shopper browses, and the conversation survives page loads — they pick up right where they left off.
👀 Try it before installing
Open the demo store — a regular WooCommerce shop with Backpilot installed — and ask the concierge for a product, a size, or a gift idea. What you see there is exactly what your shoppers get.
🏗️ How it works
One click, and your store is connected. The plugin connects your store to the Backpilot service, which does all the heavy lifting and hides the complexity.
-
Your catalog, AI-ready. Backpilot reads your catalog straight from the WooCommerce Store API — the same public data any visitor’s browser sees — and turns it into a structure an AI can reason about. No scraping, no fragile mappings.
-
A cart your store recognizes. The concierge builds the cart in your shopper’s own WooCommerce session, then hands them to the checkout you already run. One order, one source of truth.
-
Continuous sync, no stale answers. Sell a unit, change a price, ship a new SKU — Backpilot stays in sync. Shoppers in chat see what’s actually in stock at the price you actually charge.
🆓 Start with the free plan
Free to install. Free to start. Backpilot offers a fully functional free plan with every feature included — enough to see what the concierge does for real shoppers on your store.
The free tier includes up to 50 shopper conversations per month, at no charge. One conversation is one chat session in which a shopper has sent at least one message, and the count resets monthly — your Backpilot settings page shows the date. When the month’s conversations are used up, the concierge simply stops appearing on your storefront until the count resets.
When you need more than that, you can upgrade your plan — see the pricing page.
🔌 External services
The plugin is the connector between your store and the Backpilot service, which powers the concierge; the service is required for the plugin to work.
Nothing is sent until you click Connect. After that: connecting registers your shop with the service (your site’s URL, your administrator email — used only to tell you when your shop goes live or needs attention — and your WordPress, WooCommerce and plugin versions); the service then reads your public product catalog through the standard WooCommerce Store API and keeps it in sync; your site periodically checks your shop’s status using the site key issued at registration; and when a shopper uses the concierge, their messages and the products shown are processed and stored by the service — payment details are never involved, checkout runs on your own site. Deleting the plugin sends one deregistration request that stops the service from serving your shop.
Installation
Backpilot is a WordPress plugin that connects your WooCommerce store to the Backpilot service — the plugin is the connector and the control panel.
- Install and activate the Backpilot plugin (WooCommerce must be active).
- Go to Backpilot in the WordPress admin menu.
- Connect your store by clicking Connect shop.
- Watch the status card while your catalog imports — this usually takes a few minutes.
- When the status shows Active, the concierge is live on your storefront.

Frequently asked questions
Is this just another chatbot?
It’s chat, but not a canned-answers chatbot. Backpilot is an AI shopping assistant grounded in your live catalog — it searches real products, checks stock and prices, fills the cart, and knows the page your shopper is on. When your store doesn’t have something, it says so instead of making things up.
Can I try it before installing?
Yes — open the demo store, a regular WooCommerce shop with Backpilot installed, and ask the concierge for a product, a size, or a gift idea. What you see there is exactly what your shoppers get.
Does it work with my theme?
Yes. The concierge is a self-contained launcher and panel that floats above your pages — it doesn’t touch your theme’s markup, styles, or layout, and works the same on block and classic themes.
Will it slow my store down?
The storefront loads one small asynchronous script, and only on pages where the concierge is enabled. Beyond the launcher button, nothing loads until a shopper opens the chat. If Backpilot is ever unreachable, your store is unaffected — the concierge simply doesn’t appear.
What data does Backpilot use?
Nothing is sent until you click Connect in plugin settings. After that, Backpilot reads your public product data through the standard WooCommerce Store API — the same data any visitor’s browser can read. Shoppers’ payment details are never involved: checkout runs on your own site, as always.
Can I turn it off?
Instantly. One checkbox in plugin settings removes the concierge from every page of your storefront. Deleting the plugin disconnects your shop and removes every setting it stored; data held by the service is deleted within 90 days of disconnecting — sooner on request at privacy@backpilot.ai.
What languages does it speak?
Shoppers can chat in any language, and the concierge answers in the same one. The concierge panel itself follows your storefront’s language and ships in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Dutch and Ukrainian; any other storefront language shows the panel in English. The plugin’s admin pages are in English, with community translations delivered as WordPress language packs — see the Languages list on this page.
