About AutoDescriptor
From the official readme · v3.0.1Description
AutoDescriptor is a bulk automatic tool to generate, manage, and clean up meta descriptions for your WordPress content.
While the importance of meta descriptions for direct search rankings is often debated, they still play a significant role in real-world scenarios:
- Search engine result snippets (SERP presentation)
- Accessibility and content summaries
- Technical SEO audits and quality checks
- Performance and SEO tools such as Google Lighthouse
For example, Google Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights often flag pages without a meta description and may assign a lower SEO score to them.
AutoDescriptor focuses on providing solid defaults and safe tools where WordPress core intentionally stays minimal.
Why meta descriptions still matter
WordPress core does not:
- Generate meta descriptions automatically (per post)
- Bulk generate descriptions for multiple posts or drafts
- Provide bulk tools to manage/delete descriptions
As a result, many sites end up with:
* Missing descriptions
* Duplicate descriptions
* Descriptions copied blindly from excerpts
* No easy way to audit or fix them at scale
AutoDescriptor addresses these gaps with a conservative, editor-friendly approach.
Even if search engines sometimes rewrite descriptions, providing a clean and relevant meta description remains a widely accepted best practice — especially for technical SEO audits, accessibility checks, and performance tools.
Features
- Automatic generation of meta descriptions from post or page content
- Manual descriptions always override automatic ones
- Works with posts and pages (configurable)
- Bulk generation tool with safe batching
- Bulk deletion tool for auto and/or manual descriptions
- Optional protection for manually curated content
- Adjustable description length
- Conservative text extraction (Block Editor, Classic Editor, HTML)
- Lightweight and framework-free
- No external services, tracking, or ads
How AutoDescriptor works
When generating descriptions, the plugin:
- Extracts readable text from saved content
- Supports Block Editor output, Classic Editor, and HTML blocks
- Falls back to excerpt or title if content is unsuitable
- Creates a concise, readable summary within the configured length
- Stores the result as an automatic description
Manual descriptions are never overwritten and always take priority.
Bulk tools
The bulk tools allow you to:
- Generate descriptions for existing content
- Skip posts/pages that already have manual descriptions
- Override description length for a single run
- Delete automatic descriptions
- Delete manual descriptions (with confirmation)
- Preview random samples directly in the progress log
All bulk actions run in small, safe batches using AJAX.
Uninstall
By default, uninstalling the plugin does not remove any data.
You can explicitly opt in to full data removal (options and meta descriptions) from the plugin settings.
This behavior prevents accidental data loss.
Installation
- Upload the
autodescriptorfolder to/wp-content/plugins/ - Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu

Frequently asked questions
Does this plugin guarantee better rankings?
No. AutoDescriptor does not promise ranking improvements. It focuses on: * Completeness * Consistency * Technical SEO hygiene * Better defaults than WordPress core provides
Will it overwrite my existing descriptions?
No. Manual descriptions always override automatic ones. Bulk tools allow you to control exactly what gets generated or deleted.
Does WordPress already do this natively?
No. WordPress does not generate meta descriptions, does not provide bulk management tools for them, and does not distinguish between manual and automatic descriptions.
Is this plugin compatible with SEO plugins?
Yes. AutoDescriptor outputs a standard tag. If another plugin outputs the same tag, you should disable output in one of them.
